Morrison › Archive » Daily Portions › Archive You're here: oChristian.com » Days of Heaven Upon Earth A Year Book of Scripture Texts and Living Truths Author: A.B. Simpson 1843 - 1919 Albert Benjamin Simpson was a Canadian preacher, theologian, author, and founder of The Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA), an evangelical protestant denomination with an emphasis on global evangelism. In December 1873, at age 30, Simpson left Canada and assumed the pulpit of the largest Presbyterian church in Louisville, Kentucky, the Chestnut Street Presbyterian Church. It was in Louisville that he first conceived of preaching the gospel to the common man by building a simple tabernacle structure for that purpose. Despite his success at the Chestnut Street Church, Simpson was frustrated by their reluctance to embrace this burden for wider evangelistic endeavor. Simpson's heart for evangelism was to become the driving force behind the creation of the C&MA. Initially, the Christian and Missionary Alliance was not founded as a denomination, but as an organized movement of world evangelism. Today, the C&MA denomination plays a leadership role in global evangelism. » Today's Devotional » Archive - See a Different Day Our Daily Homily Author: Frederick Brotherton Meyer 1847 - 1929 F. B. Meyer was a Baptist pastor and evangelist in England, born in London. He attended Brighton College and graduated from London University in 1869. He studied theology at Regents Park Baptist College. Meyer began pastoring churches in 1870. His first pastorate was at Pembroke Baptist Chapel in Liverpool. In 1872 he pastored Priory Street Baptist Church in York. While he was there he met the American evangelist Dwight L. Moody, whom he introduced to other churches in England. The two preachers became lifelong friends. In 1895 Meyer went to Christ Church in Lambeth. At the time only 100 people attended the church, but within two years over 2,000 were regularly attending. He stayed there for fifteen years, and then began a traveling to preach at conferences and evangelistic services. His evangelistic tours included South Africa and Asia. He also visited the United States and Canada several times. He spent the last few years of his life working as a pastor in England's churches, but still made trips to North America, including one he made at age 80. Meyer was part of the Higher Life movement and preached often at the Keswick Convention. He was known as a crusader against immorality. He preached against drunkenness and prostitution. He is said to have brought about the closing of hundreds of saloons and brothels. » Today's Devotional » Archive - See a Different Day Streams in the Desert Author: Mrs. Charles Cowman Mrs. Charles E. Cowman was the wife of Rev. Charles Cowman, founder of the Oriental Missionary Society. This organization was founded by Rev. Cowman with the purpose of evangelizing and setting up native ministries in Japan, Korea, China, and Formosa. Rev. and Mrs. Cowman served for 20 years until Rev. Cowman's failing health forced them to return to their home in California. Streams in the Desert is a devotional compiled by Lettie Cowman from various sermons, readings, writings, and poetry she had read over the years. She collected these works during the dark time in her life when her beloved husband, Charles, was terminally ill. Her devotional has brought comfort and encouragement to millions of people around the world who also face difficult times. The immense popularity of this book has allowed at least 19 editions of the book to be printed. The initial response to the devotional brought letters from China, Japan, Korea, Australia, Africa, and many island countries. The widespread appeal grows daily as new readers discover the joy, challenge, and inspiration found in Streams in the Desert and Mrs. Cowman's other compilations. First published in 1925, Mrs. Lettie Cowman's Streams in the Desert is a masterful compilation of inspirational writings from a variety of sources. » Today's Devotional » Archive - See a Different Day Devotional Sermons Author: George H. Morrison 1866-1928 George Herbert Morrison has been characterized as one of the century's great "pastor-preachers," always seeking to meet life's need with a word from God. Morrison's preaching reflected his deep concern for the individual person through simplicity of language, certainty of word choice, confident assertion of Scripture, and careful poetic phrasing. This same high regard for his audience appeared in his loving presentation of the truth no matter how controversial the issue, in the absence of contempt for others in his sermons, in his attempts to lead his listeners from their own interests to a broader perception of Christian concern. » Today's Devotional » Archive - See a Different Day Daily Portions Author: J. C. Philpot 1802-1869 J. C. Philpot's preaching was marked by clear views of gospel truth; an ability to set forth the deepest truths in a simple manner; a wealth of similies from nature to open up and explain the things of God; and a clear discernment of the vital distinctions between a mere profession of Christ and a true saving knowledge of Him. Ears From Harvested Sheaves; Or, Daily Portions was selected from the works of J. C. Philpot by his daughters. » Today's Devotional » Archive - See a Different Day Like This Page?
